Technology & Digital Learning

In ICT lessons at Kew College Prep, our pupils learn to explore ideas, solve problems, and use technology with purpose and confidence. From Nursery through to Year 6, pupils are introduced to a broad and carefully structured ICT curriculum that helps them understand the role of technology in the world around them, while developing creativity and curiosity. The aim of our ICT lessons is to equip children with the digital skills they need for the modern world.

We believe children learn best through exploration and hands-on experiences. As a result, ICT lessons are active and purposeful, giving pupils opportunities to work collaboratively, problem-solve and think logically using a wide range of technologies.

Early Years (Nursery & Reception)

Our youngest pupils begin their digital journey by discovering what technology is and how it can help us. Using tools such as Beebots and electronic toys, children learn early coding and directional skills through play, alongside developing fine motor skills and confidence with simple devices. These activities support early numeracy, language and teamwork, all without the need for constant screen use.

Infant House (Years 1 & 2)

As pupils move into Infant House, they begin to build on these foundations. They learn basic computing skills, explore digital photography and create simple animations. Children are introduced to data handling and digital graphs, word processing and publishing, and begin to understand how technology can be used to create, organise and share information. They continue to learn about coding through Beebots and Scratch Jr, and enjoy creative projects including digital posters, photography and animation.

Junior House (Years 3–6)

In Junior House, pupils develop their skills in greater depth and with increasing independence. They explore more detailed coding and robotics, create stop-motion animations, design websites and experiment with graphic design. Pupils also learn how to record and edit podcasts, use databases effectively and explore the realms of AI.

Throughout these years, digital citizenship is woven through the curriculum. Pupils learn how to stay safe online, communicate responsibly and understand the impact of digital technology on themselves and others.

By the end of Year 6, pupils leave us as thoughtful, capable and creative users of technology, ready for the next stage of their education, and equipped with skills that extend far beyond the screen.

Extra-curricular opportunities

Across all year groups, we offer clubs, run either by our ICT teacher or by specialist providers, where children can deepen their learning and explore topics further. Our current clubs include:

  • Minecraft club
  • Code club
  • Touch Typing
  • The Inventors STEM club
  • Robotics
  • ICT Minis (Reception to Year 2)
  • Virtual Reality

Pupil Digital Leaders

Our Digital Leaders play a key role in shaping and championing digital learning across the school. Elected from our Year 6 pupils, alongside other positions of responsibility, they are enthusiastic ambassadors for technology and innovation.

Digital Leaders represent the school in all matters relating to technology. They take a leading role in promoting safe, responsible and positive use of digital tools, including planning and delivering online safety assemblies for their peers. They are also responsible for helping to look after technology in and around the school, setting an excellent example through their own confident, respectful and purposeful use of digital devices.

Working closely with staff, the Digital Leaders are actively involved in the ongoing development of our ICT and Digital Learning curriculum. In the summer term, they plan and deliver a short sequence of lessons to pupils in Infant House, giving the younger children the opportunity to explore something new and exciting in technology, chosen and designed by the Digital Leaders themselves.

To support their work and inspire fresh ideas, our Digital Leaders will be visiting the Bett Show in January 2026. This experience will expose them to the latest developments in educational technology and enables them to contribute thoughtfully to decisions about new tools and resources for the school.

Through leadership, creativity and collaboration, our Digital Leaders help ensure that technology is used meaningfully, safely and imaginatively throughout school life.
