Reception Curriculum

In Reception we follow the Early Years and Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. Children are given a thorough grounding in phonics and reading, including segmenting and blending sounds and exploring books about being kind to each other, different families, and celebrating our differences. Children are taught to recognise and use numbers with a real understanding, for example the formation of numbers to 10, counting forwards to 20 and back from 10, and understanding one more and less than. Reception are also encouraged to express and develop their creativity, such as engaging in collage, role play, sewing, small world play, baking and junk modelling

Our Reception classes enjoy weekly Forest School sessions where children explore the natural environment and understand the effect of changing seasons on the natural world. They also regularly visit our school library where they enjoy sessions with our dedicated librarian and explore new stories together.

Reception children also receive lessons from our specialist staff. In Art lessons, children use a variety of techniques and materials including drawing, chalk pastels, painting, collage, mixed media and clay modelling. In PE and dance they develop their body awareness and moving in different ways. Music lessons explore different genres of music through listening, composing and performing. In ICT, children are introduced to the basics of coding by programming a robot to follow a sequence of commands. They also enjoy creating images on Purple Mash and Busy Things and develop their keyboard recognition and typing skills. French lessons encourage learning of basic vocabulary and structures, including greetings, numbers, weather and colours.

As well as addressing the academic aspects of the curriculum, we teach our children about the importance of friendship, to care for and respect each other, to value co-operation and to be tolerant of all differences. We aim to give all our children the best possible start in life and the support to reach their potential.
