11+ success
A leading prep school in Richmond for 11+ success
Kew College Prep is widely recognised as one of the leading prep schools in Richmond upon Thames for 11+ preparation, with a strong track record of success across the whole cohort. Serving families across Richmond, Chiswick and south‑west London, we consistently support pupils in securing places at some of the most academically selective senior schools.
Each year, children progress to leading independent schools including Lady Eleanor Holles, Latymer Upper, Godolphin & Latymer, Hampton School, St Paul’s Boys, St Paul’s Girls and King’s College School, as well as selective grammar schools such as Tiffin Girls’ and Tiffin Boys’. These outcomes are achieved through excellent teaching and skills developed over time, not short‑term exam coaching.
11+ success through a balanced, long‑term approach
Families looking for the best prep schools in Richmond for 11+ increasingly value an education that balances ambition with wellbeing. Preparation is carefully paced, personalised and grounded in a deep understanding of each child as an individual learner, with close guidance for families as they consider senior school choices. 11+ success is built gradually through high‑quality teaching and carefully sequenced learning from the earliest years to Year 6.
This balanced and supportive approach not only leads to consistently excellent 11+ outcomes across the whole cohort, but also ensures pupils leave Kew College Prep confident, resilient and ready to thrive in the next stage of their education, academically, socially and emotionally.
Answering your questions on the 11+ journey
What is the 11+ programme at Kew College Prep?
Kew College Prep offers a nurturing and personalised 11+ programme for Year 5 and 6 pupils, including specialist maths, English and reasoning courses taught by subject experts and dedicated Teaching Assistants. The programme is designed to support and guide children through 11+ exam preparation and interviews, as well as ensuring they are well prepared for life at senior school.
When does 11+ preparation begin?
Uniquely, children transition to their Year 6 teachers mid-way through Year 5, giving them a full year of teaching with these specialist members of staff and avoiding a change in teacher just before their exams. However, teachers start to embed skills that will be useful for 11+ throughout a child’s time at Kew College Prep, for example lessons in reasoning start in Year 4. Our gradual approach helps prepare children without the pressure of cramming in the run up to exams.
What subjects are covered in the 11+ programme?
Year 6 teachers provide appropriate support, including optional extended days and after school lessons in English, maths and reasoning. The programme maintains a broad and rich curriculum, including sport, art and drama, to ensure a real balance of academic and non-academic pursuits. We take wellbeing seriously and believe it is important for the children to continue to enjoy other interests and maintain a balance during the 11+ process.
How does Kew College Prep support children’s wellbeing during exam preparation?
Throughout the process, the priority for all staff is the wellbeing of the pupils. Children are taught strategies for managing stressful emotions, and the team builds strong links between pupils, parents and teachers so that children are comfortable, confident and able to discuss any concerns.
What happens after the exams are over?
Once exams are over, children enjoy a comprehensive programme of lessons and activities, tailored to each individual cohort, to prepare them for senior school, including teamwork activities and life skills. Over the past few years the school has included the introduction to languages such as Chinese, Spanish and Latin, and has worked with staff from Richmond Borough who deliver a cycling proficiency and Junior Citizen Programme. The also take part in Young Enterprise, put on their Year 6 production at the Musical Museum and have a wonderful residential trip to France!
