From Nursery to Prep: Helping Children Take the Next Step with Confidence

Posted: 1st December 2025

The transition from nursery to school is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s life. At Kew College Prep Nursery in Kew, near Chiswick, we ensure this step feels natural, exciting, and full of opportunity.

Because our nursery is part of our wider prep school in South West London, our children grow within a familiar environment where teachers know them well. They form friendships which they keep throughout their prep school life, helping them to feel happy and at ease moving up to Reception. This continuity means that when they arrive for their first day in Reception, they already feel at home; confident in their surroundings and ready to learn.

In nursery, children develop early literacy and numeracy skills, as well as independence and resilience, through play-based learning, storytelling, and exploration. They learn to ask questions, collaborate with friends, and manage new routines, which are all key elements of a successful transition to Reception.

We also provide specialist-led sessions in subjects such as music, sport, French, ICT and dance, giving children a taste of the prep experience from the start and allowing them to get to know our specialist teachers, who will continue to teach them throughout their time at Kew College Prep. This approach builds confidence and a love of learning that continues through their school years.

Parents often tell us that the move from Nursery to Prep feels seamless and a natural continuation of the learning journey their child began at age three. By the time our pupils sit their 11+ exams, the confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking established in those early years are still shining through.

At Kew College Prep Nursery in Richmond, we’re proud to offer a pathway that begins with joyful exploration and leads to lifelong achievement. Come and see how we prepare children for the next step with confidence and care.
