Why Outdoor Learning is at the Heart of a Great Nursery Education

At Kew College Prep Nursery in Kew, near Chiswick, we believe that some of the best lessons happen not inside a classroom, but under the open sky. Outdoor spaces are living classrooms where children explore, experiment, and connect with the world around them.
For our Nursery and Reception children, outdoor learning is a central part of our curriculum. Whether children are collecting leaves in Priory Park in Kew, building dens, or observing minibeasts, they are developing the curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving skills that form the foundation for academic success.
Research consistently shows that time spent outdoors improves wellbeing, concentration, and memory. Physical play strengthens the body and mind, while imaginative play builds language and collaboration. In our South West London nursery, muddy knees and bright smiles are signs of deep learning in action.
Our teachers carefully plan outdoor experiences that align with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), ensuring every adventure has purpose. Counting puddles becomes an early maths activity; spotting shapes in nature builds visual awareness; a walk in the park becomes a science lesson about seasons and habitats.
By giving children time and space to explore, we nurture independent thinkers who approach challenges with confidence. It’s this blend of curiosity and resilience that helps our pupils thrive later in our prep school and far beyond.
At Kew College Prep Nursery, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. It grows in our nursery outdoor space, in the park, and in every shared discovery outdoors. We invite you to book a visit and see how outdoor learning inspires our youngest learners every day.
